State owned electricity company PLN said that expansion of Tarahan coal-fired power plant in Lampung would be completed by the end of 2007 with 200MW addition expected to ease power supply shortage in Southern Sumatra area.

PLN's corporate secretary Moh. Harry Jaya Pahlawan said in Jakarta last week that the construction of the two power generators, each with a capacity of 1 x 100 MW, would cost about Rp 2.46 trillion.

He said that PLN would buy low calorific coal from state owned coal mining company PT Tambang Batubara Bukit Asam (PT BA) for the operation of the power plants. "PLN has secured a 25-year contract to buy about 700,000 tons of coal from PT BA," he added.

Harry said the fourth unit is scheduled to start operation in September 2007, while the third unit will be followed in the end of the year.(*)
