The Committee for Labor Dispute Settlement (P4) finally gave its approval over PT Thiess Contractor Indonesia?s (TCI) decision to fire some 171 mining workers, which is expected to end months of labor conflict within the company.

TCI is a sub contractor of coal mining firm PT Kideco Jaya Agung in the Batu Sopang area, Pasir regency, East Kalimantan.

The local Kaltim Post daily reported on Tuesday that the P4 approval was issued on March 28. The approval letter states that the dismissal was effective since end of March and the company should provide the necessary compensation.

TCI dismissed the workers in November last year after they held days of strike to demand higher compensation for extra working hours. The decision has led to a protracted dispute, which not only drew the attention of the local government and lawmakers but also the Minister of Manpower Jaco Nuwa Wea.(*)
