The Center for Research and Development of Coal and Mineral Technology (Tekmira), a Bandung-based unit of the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, plans to develop a technology that can process waste material (sludge) from coal mining into products with economic value, Bisnis Indonesia daily reported on Wednesday.
The paper quoted Tekmira head M. Lobo Balia as saying that waste from coal mining operation in the banks of the Mahakam River in East Kalimantan had been disposed into the river.
Lobo, however, did not provide details about the planned technology.(*)
