An environmental investigation conducted by a team from the University of Samratulangi (Unsrat) in Manado, North Sulawesi, and the Ministry of Environment concluded that there's possibility that gold mining firm PT Newmont Minahasa Raya had polluted the local Teluk Buyat bay.
The Manado Post said that the result of the research work of the academician contradicted with the result of a team formed by Newmont and the local North Sulawesi administration, which said that Newmont had not polluted the Teluk Buyat bay.
The contradiction emerged during a presentation made by the Unsrat team. The Indonesian Environmental Forum (Walhi) organized the presentation.
The environmental audit was made after Walhi and others alleged Newmont's tailing waste product had polluted the Teluk Buyat bay.
The Unsrat team recommended Newmont to amend its waste management treatment system. (*)
