Around 10 thousand employees working in the mining, energy and chemical sectors in East Kalimantan demanded a raise in the provincial minimum salary to Rp 504,000 (US$=Rp9,200) per month from the current level of Rp 300,000 per month, the local Kaltim Post daily reported.
The paper said that the FSP mining, energy and chemical labor federation union is still negotiating the demand with the companies.
"The demand has been formulated and delivered at the meeting with the management of the mining companies in East Kalimantan. The meeting was also mediated by the office of the provincial ministry of labor affairs. But after three meetings, we have not reached a final agreement, because there still a bargaining process with the management of the companies. So we will hold another meeting on November 16," said head of the Kutai office of the FSP Andi Muchtar.
Andi hope that the next meeting would result in a final agreement.
"What is clear is that FSP wants the salary to increase to Rp 504,000 per month. If lower than that, we expect it not to be too low," he added. (*)
