A fire broke out on the MT Federal II floating storage and offloading (FSO) vessel during maintenance at ASL Shipyard in Batu Aji, Batam, early Wednesday, killing ten workers and seriously injuring 18 others, local authorities reported. The incident occurred around 04:00 local time at the shipyard, where the vessel was undergoing dry-docking and repairs.

The MT Federal II had previously experienced a fire in June 2025 that killed four workers and injured five. At that time, the vessel, part of a seven-year charter agreement with PT Pertamina Hulu Energi OSES, was undergoing routine maintenance, and Federal International, the vessel’s Singapore-listed parent, reported the damage was limited and unlikely to affect the maintenance schedule.

Police and emergency teams responded to the latest blaze, and the injured were taken to several hospitals in Batam, including RS Mutiara Aini, RS Elisabeth, RSUD Embung Fatimah, and RS Graha Hermine. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire and whether negligence or operational errors contributed to the casualties.

Local police confirmed that the site remains under control, and rescue and recovery efforts are ongoing.
