State owned electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) plans to open the prequalification tender for the construction of Sumsel unit 9 and Sumsel unit 10 mine-mouth power plants in South Sumatra in June this year.

PLN?s Business and Risk management Director Murtaqi Syamsuddin said in Jakarta on Tuesday that the construction of the two coal-fired power plants which would have combined capacity of 1,800 megawatt would cost about US$3 billion. He said that PLN would first appoint a consulting company to conduct a feasibility study for the construction and operation of the two power projects. ?The feasibility study is expected to be concluded in June, and then we open the pre-qualification tender,? he added.

He said that coal mining company PT Bukit Asam would provide coal supply for the two power plants which was projected to reach 4.5 million tons a year

PLN would cooperate with the government-sponsored infrastructure financing guarantee agency PT Penjaminan Infrastruktur Indonesia (PII) in providing the financial guarantee for the two power projects. ?We will cooperate with PII in providing the guarantee, which will be given under a scheme similar to those given to PLTU Jawa Tengah,? he said.
