TEPI said in a statement Thursday this initiative is currently the largest solar power project in Indonesia.
With total capacity of about 7 MWp, the projects will comprise of three solar power areas in East Kalimantan Province, the statement said.
The Senipah project, located at the Senipah terminal operated by TEPI, with a capacity of about 4MWp, the power plant is currently the largest scheduled project in Indonesia. Photo voltaic solar panel will be installed via ground mounted system, taking advantage of the available land without having to cause disturbance to the activities at Senipah, the statement explained.
Electricity produced from the project will enhance the existing generator which has been supporting the operation of the oil and gas facilities at Senipah. The project will produce electricity equal to the power consumption of 2,700 households in Indonesia.
Meanwhile, the Balikpapan project will be set up in Balikpapan, and located within the TEPI office omplex. With capacity of 2 MWp, the photovoltaic (PV) panel will be installed on top a number of buildings in the office compound. There is also a plan to open up a parking area with PV panel as its roof. The project will produce power equal to electricity consumption of 1,200 households in Indonesia.
And finally, the Handil project, operated by TEPI with an installed capacity of 0.8 MWp. In this project, the solar panels will be installed on top of four buildings in the Handil Base. Once in operation, the project will provide 14.5 percent of the electricity consumption at the Handil Base.
Once all in operation, the three projects will be able to reduce carbon emission by as much as 2,220 tons per year, TEPI said in the statement, adding that it is in line with the Indonesian government target to achieve 23 percent renewable energy production in the energy mix in 2015.
