Thai power firm may eye Indonesian coal mine acquisition

Thai-based firm National Power Supply Co, Ltd may increase coal import from Indonesia and is considering to acquire Indonesian mine if its plan to expand power plant capacity in Thailand is approved by the government.

Mining Manager Vasin Tangkew told Petromindo.Com on Monday that the company is proposing to build 700-MW power plant in Thailand on top of its current 300-MW plant.

Tengkew said if the proposal was approved, the company will need additional supply of 2 million tones of coal per annum.

?That level of coal requirement would justify us to acquire coal mine in Indonesia,? he said.

Currently the company imports 1MTPA of coal entirely from Indonesia to meet its fuel requirement. Tengkew said the fuel is sourced under spot contracts from miners such as Anugerah Bara Kaltim and Baramulti Suksessarana. (denny)
