Thiess director Sam Rumende said the alleged illegal strike had occurred after two workers received mild discipline action for sleeping on duty.
?The supervisor was within his rights to take this action as sleeping on duty is defined as a violation of the company regulations. It is also a serious safety breach which warrants discipline action,? Rumende said in a letter to Petromindo.Com.
At a meeting Monday striking workers could not explain why they had continued their strike, he said.
He said his company remains committed to following due legal process in this matter. Consequently, the company management had repeatedly requested the protesting employees to return to work.
Thiess is a contractor of South Kalimantan-based coal miner PT Arutmin Indonesia. (robert)
