PT Thiess Contractors Indonesia (TCI), the contractor of coal mining firm PT Kideco Jaya Agung in Pasir Regency, East Kalimantan, finally dismissed 171 employees which had been fighting for a raise in salary, the local Kaltim Post daily reported Saturday.
The paper quoted TCI office manager Aksa Arsyad as saying that the company had no alternative than firing the protesting workers because they have declined to return to work.
?We have given them a chance during the past 38 days to return to work,? he said.
The protesting employees have held a strike during the past couple of months.
The high profile dispute had not only drawn the attention of local administration, but also the Minister of Labor Affairs Jacob Nuwa Wea who had tried to become mediator for the two parties.(*)
