Thiess ex-workers still demand salaries

Former workers of PT Thiess Contractors Indonesia (TCI), a contractor of South Kalimantan based coal miner PT Arutmin Indonesia, have demanded TCI to pay them, saying their discharge about one year ago was illegal, Kaltim Post daily reported on Saturday.

Misran, one of the 633 workers fired, said on Friday they were against the recent verdict handed down by the state administrative court. The court endorsed TCI?s decision to fire the workers.

Misran said the court had not taken into account their complaints that the TCI management had forced them to work for 12 hours a day without extra payment.

TCI fired the 633 workers in June 2002 after they refused to return to work at its mining project.

They had gone on strike, demanding the company management to remove one of the firm?s supervisor who they said as too arrogant. Their demand was turned down.

TCI operates in Ketumpang Tengah in Kota Baru regency, South Kalimantan. (*)
