Australian construction firm Thiess and German firm Siemens in cooperation with local firm PT Petromuba would build a 2 x 150 MW mine mouth power plant, valued at Rp 3 trillion in Musi Banyuasin, South Sumatra, Investor Daily reported on Friday.
The construction of the project was expected to start early next year, Zuher Effendi, head of the energy and mining office at the Musi Banyuasin regency, was quoited by the newspaper as saying on Thursday.
Thiess will operate the plant using technology assistance from Siemens and coal supply from Petromuba.
The power plant will need 1.5 million tons of coal per year and the electricity will be sold to state owned electricity firm PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) Rp 500-550 per kwh.
Separately, PLN's Deputy Director of Private Generator Development Nasri Sebayang said the project was still in the process of evaluation and could start construction next year..
It remains unclear if the project was similar to the one Petromuba, a company owned by the regency's administration, planned to build in 2005. According to reports, Chinese firm Gohuwa signed the agreement to build a coal-fired power plant in the regency in Hong Kong on Nov. 7, 2005. The power plant would have a capacity of 2x100 megawatts, said Musi Banyuasin regent Alex Noerdin said on Nov 24, 2005. (*)
