Thousand of youths in East Kalimantan plan rally today to expel SBSI labor union

Thousands of youth and some villagers in Pasir regency, East Kalimantan, plan to hold a rally to day in a bid to drive out the SBSI labor union, which had been accused of provoking employees of Korean coal mining firm PT Kideco Jaya Agung, the local Kaltim Post daily reported Wednesday.

The paper said that that the rally would be organized by the KNPI youth organization.

The paper said that the SBSI-led labor strike had caused Kideco to halt its operation, and if this went on it would create a negative impact to Pasir regency.

The paper quoted KNPI as saying that Kideco is one of the important assets to Pasir regency.

KNPI has said that anyone trying to ruin the economic activity Pasir regency and create social unrest should be driven out from the area.

Thousands of employees of Kideco have held a strike since last week demanding a better salary, among other things. The SBSI is a high profile labor union which had also held similar strikes in other areas in East Kalimantan.(*)
