Thousands of employees of liquefied natural gas producer PT Badak NGL in Bontang, East Kalimantan, planned to stage a massive demonstration on Friday.

Head of the company?s FPLB labor union Sahrial Piliang was quoted by the Kaltim Post daily as saying that the labor demonstration was made to demand the company to observe the labor?s rights and to improve welfare.

Sahrial was speaking following a meeting with the Bontang police to inform them about the planned demonstration.

He said that many employees had been dissatisfied with the working condition at the company, prompting some of them to move to other companies overseas.

He also lambasted the management for hiring workers from Cilacap, Central Java, claimed by the management to be skilled workers but it turned out that they knew nothing about the machinery at the local facility.(*)
