The Ministry of Public Works and People’s Housing plans to build three dams in Southeast Sulawesi as part of long-term measures to help reduce risk flood in the province.

The ministry said in a statement issued following a visit by Minister Basuki Hadimuljono to the province on Thursday, said that the ministry is currently in the process of developing the Ladongi Dam in Kolaka Timur Regency with capacity to accommodate up to 45.9 million cubic meters of water.

Construction progress of this dam project has now reached 50 percent, and is targeted to be completed in 2020, the statement said.

The second dam to be developed is the Ameroro Dam with capacity of 55.1 million cubic meters in Konawe Regency.  Tender to select contractor for the project is scheduled to be held this year, the statement said.

The third is the Pelosika Dam with much greater capacity of 822 million cubic meters.  Preparations are underway to hold tender next year to select contract for the project.

Southeast Sulawesi was hit by severe floods earlier this month, where thousands of people sought for safety to higher grounds.  The floods had also caused damaged to public facilities such as roads and bridges.
