Three foreign contractors including two from Japan and one from Canada are competing for the EPC contract of PT Amman Mineral Nusa Tenggara?s (AMNT) copper smelter project, Bisnis Indonesia reported on Wednesday.

The paper quoted AMNT smelter project leader Lukman Mahfoedz as saying that the FEED and EPC documents have been handed over to the three contractors. He declined to disclose the name of the three contractors, one of which will be selected by AMNT to develop the copper smelter.

Lukman said that construction is expected to start in August of next year in the hope it could be completed by 2021 or 2022.

The copper smelter, which will be located at AMNT?s Batu Hijau mine in West Nusa Tenggara Province, will have capacity to refine 2 million tons per year of copper concentrates, much higher than AMNT?s current production rate of 600,000-700,000 tons per year. Lukman said that AMNT is open to refine copper concentrates produced by other mining firms.

AMNT is 82.2 percent owned by PT Amman Mineral Internasional, with the remainder held by PT Pukuafu Indah. Amman Mineral Internasional is equally owned by IDX-listed energy firm PT Medco Energi Internasional Tbk and PT AP Investment. (*)
