Three geothermal plants to start operation in 2018

Three geothermal power plant (PLTP) projects with combined capacity of 160 MW are expected to start operation in 2018, according to the Directorate General of New and Renewable Energy at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

Director of Geothermal at the directorate, Yunus Saifulhak said on Wednesday that a110 MW PLTP Sarulla Unit 3 in Gunung Sibual-buali, Tapanuli Utara Regency, North Sumatra Province, is expected to start operation in March of 2018.

?The initial target was (for the power plant) to start operation in May 2018, but turns out it can be accelerated to March,? he told Petromindo.com.

The PLTP Sarulla is operated by Sarulla Operation Limited (SOL), which is owned by Itochu Corporation (25% interest), Kyushu electric Power Co. Inc. (25%), PT Medco Power Indonesia (18.99%), Ormat International Inc. (12.75%), and Inpex (18.25%).

Yunus said that a 2x20 MW PLTP Sorak Merapi, also in North Sumatra, operated by KS Orka Renewables Pte Ltd, is targeted to start operation in September 2018. And another project owned by KS Orka, a 30 MW PLTP Sokoria, in East Nusa Tenggara, is projected to start operation at the end of 2018, he said.
