Three Pertamina oil and gas fields halt operations due to Sumatra floods

Severe floods and landslides across Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra have disrupted state-owned oil and gas firm PT Pertamina’s upstream operations, forcing the temporary shutdown of three oil and gas fields: the NSO Field, Rantau Field, and Pangkalan Susu Field. All three assets fall under Pertamina’s Upstream Subholding Regional 1, coordinated by Pertamina Hulu Rokan (PHR).

According to information received by Dunia Energi, production activities at the three fields have been suspended due to the impact of the natural disaster. The upstream oil and gas regulator, SKK Migas, has confirmed receiving reports from Pertamina regarding the shutdown.

“Yes, production there has been temporarily halted,” said SKK Migas Deputy for Exploitation Taufan Marhaendrajana on Thursday (Dec. 4).

Taufan noted that he has yet to receive detailed figures on the production decline resulting from the shutdown. Recovery efforts will begin once access to the affected areas is restored and floodwaters recede.

“Fortunately, the shortfall can still be offset by higher output from other fields, so the effect on national production is not too significant. However, any disruption remains a concern for us,” he said.

PHR Zone 1 General Manager Hari Widodo confirmed that flooding and landslides have impacted operations at the PHE NSO Field, Pertamina EP Pangkalan Susu Field, and Pertamina EP Rantau Field.

“In response to this disaster, PHR Zone 1 has activated its emergency response team to carry out rapid mitigation efforts to minimize the impact on workers and their families, as well as to support surrounding communities,” Hari said.

He added that the company is ensuring that restoration of affected operational and production facilities is conducted with strict adherence to safety protocols. Worker and community safety, he stressed, remains the company’s top priority.

“All emergency response activities are being carried out in close coordination with SKK Migas, local governments, BPBD, and other stakeholders,” Hari said.
