Three power plants in Papua are expected to start operation this year, which will allow certain parts, specifically Jayapura and Nabire, to enjoy greater electricity surplus enough to lure new investment.

State-owned electricity firm PT PLN Business Director for Maluku and Papua Region, Haryanto WS said in a statement Sunday that the second unit 10 MW PLTU Papua 2 coal-fired power plant in Jayapura is scheduled to start operation soon following the recent operation of the first unit, also with capacity of 10 MW.

He said that a 50 MW mobile power plant (MPP) in Jayapura is targeted to start operation in September of this year. Together, the two power plants will increase installed electricity capacity in Jayapura system to 143 MW, compared to estimated peak load of 84 MW at the end of the year, thus resulting in a power surplus of 59 MW, which is equal to additional 29,000 business power customers with capacity of 2,200 MVA.

He added that a 20 MW MPP in the economically-expanding Nabire Regency is targeted to start operation in November of this year. As per May, peak load in Nabire system stood at 15 MW, compared to installed capacity of 19 MW. With the additional supply from the MPP, the Nabire system will have installed capacity of 39 MW by the end of this year.
