Three power producers add capacity by 1,385 MW

Three independent power producers including PT Paiton Energi, PT Energy Sengkang and Siemens will expand their power generating capacity by a total of 1,385 MW, with an additional investment of at least US$1.15 billion, Bisnis Indonesia reported on Friday.

State owned electricity company PLN’s president Eddie Widiono said in Jakarta on Wednesday that PT Paiton which operates the 1,230 MW Paiton steam power plant in East Java would add the plant’s capacity by 800 MW, with investment of about US$1 million per MW.

PT Energy Sengkang which operates the 135 MW steam power plant in Sengkang, South Sulawesi would add its capacity by 65 MW, while Siemens which operates the Muara Tawar I steam power plant would increase capacity by 520 MW.

PT Paiton will invest about US$800 million for the capacity expansion while Energy Sengkang and Siemens would spend about US$39 million and US$312 million, respectively. The total investment of the three companies would reach US$1.15 billion.

Eddie said that PLN had approved Sengkang’s expansion proposal and was studying those of the other two companies. (*)
