State-owned tin mining company PT Timah has scrapped an earlier plan to set up a joint venture with Malaysian Smelting Corp Bhd in the construction of its new smelter facility in Kundur Island, Riau province.
Company president Thobrani Alwi told Petromindo.Com on Wednesday that Timah is now working together with a Riau-owned company to develop the Rp 50 billion smelter project.
He said the construction will start this month, and to be completed in one-year time. The facility will have a capacity of 7,000 tons per year, and in the future could be doubled to 14,000 tons. He did not provide details.
Earlier reports said the new smelter would use tin concentrate from Indonesia as well as from abroad.
Timah is the world?s largest tin producer with production capacity of around 48,000 tons per annum. (Alex)
