Indonesia, the world's second largest producer of tin, may cut its production by 20 percent this year in a move to curb losses from rampant theft and looting at mining sites, according to a source at the industry.

President of state-owned tin mining firm PT Tambang Timah Erry Riyana Hardjapamekas was quoted by the Mandiri online as saying that the company and another smaller tin mining company called PT Koba Tin would reduce output which they also hoped could help support sagging global price.

Timah is the world's largest integrated tin producer.

"We are planning to cut down production to 35,000 from nearly 40,000 tons last year. PT Koba Tin is planning to trim its production by 5,000 tons," Erry said.

"It will cut Indonesia's production by 20 percent to 40,000 tons this year," he added.

Indonesia produced 50,000 tons last year. (*)
