There have been four blocks of coalbed methane (CBM) that are in production while in dewatering process until now and there would be another two or three more blocks to enter production later this year.

?Currently, there are four blocks of CBM that have been in production. Those include Sanga-sanga, Sangatta, and Sekayu. I am hoping there will be two or three more blocks that will start production, so that altogether later this year we?ll have 6 or 7 blocks of CBM in production,? the energy and mineral resources ministry?s Oil and Gas Director General Evita H. Legowo said after addressing the 2012 Indonesia International Infrastructure Conference and Exhibition in Jakarta on Wednesday.

She noted that the CBM production could be used to generate power for people living around the project.

She pointed out that unlike the conventional gas, the CBM gas could be produced within relatively shorter time. ?Only within three years, the CBM can be produced, although in smaller volume at about 0.3 or 0.4 mmscfd. It will need a longer time to make it in bigger production. Conversely, with the conventional gas the production process will need about 10 years. But the production will be in bigger volume,? she said.

She further said that the government had decided to set the prices of CBM higher than the conventional gas as the cost of developing CBM was more expensive.

According to her, until now there had been 50 work areas of CBM that had been signed. ?Later this year there will be five or six more of CBM work areas in Sumatra and Kalimantan that will be signed,? she added.

During the period of 2012 and 2025, the government has targeted to sign 210 CBM work areas or about 15 CBM work areas every year. ?Based on Indonesia?s roadmap of CBM development, CBM gas production had been targeted to reach 500 mmscfd next year, 1,000 mmscfd in 2020, and 1,500 mmscfd in 2025.

The CBM gas is expected to strengthen the energy security of Indonesia. It will not only become as the source of income for the state, but it will also stand as the main driver of national economy.

Indonesia?s CBM resource is estimated at 453,3 tcf, scattering in 11 hydrocarbon basins across the archipelago. It is estimated that Indonesia has a CBM proven reserve at 112,47 tcf, while its potential reserve is estimated at 57,60 tcf.

Based on the government?s CBM data, under the category of high prospective, there is 183 tcf in South Sumatera basin, 101,6 tcf in Barito basin, 89,4 tcf in Kutei basin, and 52.5 tcf in central Sumatera basin. Under the category of medium, there is 17,5 tcf in Tarakan Utara basin, 8,4 tcf in Berau, 0,5 tcf in Ombilin, 3,0 tcf in Pasir Asam-asam basin, 0.8 tcf in Jatibarang. And under the category of low prospective, there is 2 tcf in Sulawesi basin, and 3.6 tcf in Bengkulu basin.
