Total examines impact of oil spill

French oil and gas company Total Indonesie is studying the extent of impact of the oil spill caused by the company at the Mahakam delta, East Kalimantan.

The company was conducting the study along with the province's fishery office and environmental impact supervisory body (Bapdalda), Suara Pembaruan reported.

The paper reported the crude oil that spilt out the company's oil and gas platform in the Handil field had polluted mangrove trees and the local people's shrimp ponds.

Total's spokesman Nurul Fazrie said the company was ready to pay compensation for the pollution caused by the oil spill. (*)
