Oil and gas company PT Total Indonesia said that out of some 1,500 new oil and gas wells being surveyed and developed by the company, around 900 were ready for production.

Total Indonesia production department chief IGK Madona was quoted as saying by the local Kaltim Post daily that the development of the new oil and gas wells would help the company to become the largest gas supplier in the province in the future.

"To support all that, we'll make development activities including the Tunu phase 8 in December 2002, and air injection in the Handil field in March 2001 as well as the Peciko phase 2 in December 2001," he said.

Madona did not provide further details about the development of the new oil and gas wells.

Elsewhere, Madona said that Total Indonesia's gas production reached around 3.4 billion cubic feet of which around 58 percent was delivered to the Bontang facility.

Madona said that oil production reached its peak in 1999 at 400,000 bpd.

Kaltim Post said that the company had invested around US$700 million per year in the province.(*)
