The patent of the coal upgrading technology had been filed by Drew and Nappier LLC Singapore for use and development in Asia.
TSI president director, Harsudi Supandi, said in Jakarta on Wednesday that the company would cooperate with PT Indonesia Power, a subsidiary of state electricity company PLN, on the use and development of the technology in Indonesia.
As part of the cooperation, the Geo-Coal technology had been installed in Indonesia Power?s coal-fired power plant in Labuan, Banten. Harsudi said he hoped the technology could be operated in July this year to upgrade the calorie value of low rank coal from 4,000 to 4,800.
?The technology which will be installed in the power plant will have a capacity of 1.2 million tonnes a year. The price will be quite cheap or about one-tenth of the existing coal upgrading technology,? he added.
Harsudi said the company would produce three types of Geo-Coal upgrading equipments, with upgrading capacity of 250,000 tonnes, 500,000 tonnes and 1 million tonnes a year, and production costs of US$1 million, $3 million and $5 million, respectively.
Geo-Coal technology developed by TSI uses superheated steam to reduce 60 to 80 percent of the coal moisture, a process which would increase the calorie content of low rank coal by between 50 percent and 100 percent.
Harsudi said that TSI and Agritrade Resources Ltd, which is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, would establish a joint venture to commercially operate a Geo-Coal upgrading plant. The joint venture which would be named PT Senamas Energindo Mineral (SEM) would build a Geo-Coal plant in Tamiang Layang, Central Kalimantan, with a capacity of 500,000 tonnes a year. The plant will be built in July, this year.
PT TSI is a consortium of Agritrade International Ptd Ltd, Malaysian firm WSJ International Shd Bhd and local firm PT Nusa Galih Nusantara. Agritrade is the majority stakeholder. (giok)
