The government had formally awarded French energy giant TotalFinaElf the Donggala oil block in the Makassar Strait, a senior mines and energy official said on Tuesday.
"We awarded Total the Donggala oil block because based on the tender evaluation Total offered a better working plan than the other companies," Rachmat Sudibyo, director general of oil and gas, told reporters.
Total and Unocal were among three companies bidding for the 3,800-square kilometre offshore Donggala block and its potentially large hydrocarbon reserves.
This latest award brings to six the number of blocks awarded, out of a total of nine Indonesia opened for tender in February.
Rachmat said the government was now processing the six production sharing contracts, including Total's, as well as those with BP, Conoco and other companies. (godang)
