French oil and gas company TotalFinaElf Indonesia is carrying out a recruitment program in East Kalimantan to boost the number of local workers to handle its operation in the province, local paper Kaltim Post reported on Sunday.

The paper quoted a statement from the company as saying that the company had shortlisted 1,269 youths of the 3,351 applicants in the first phase of selection.

The selected 1,269 youths have yet to pass the second phase of selection before being accepted by as production operator trainee and maintenance technician trainee at the company?s operation in the province, the paper said.

The youths are aged 25 years or younger and all residents of East Kalimantan.

During the second phase of selection, the youths will follow a series of tests, including psychology tests, and interview. TotalFinaElf has contracted a professional consultancy firm to carry out the tests to ensure that there is no collusion during the selection process.

The company said it was the twelfth local recruitment program for production operator trainee and the ninth local recruitment program for maintenance technician trainee carried out by the company.

It said that since the local recruitment program started in 1976, the company had recruited 468 local labors as production and maintenance workers at the company.

Many foreign investors have failed to maintain good relationship with local people, as such they have been often harassed by the local people, because among others investors failed to give chances for the local people to benefit from their operations, including providing them with jobs. The investors would rather recruit skilled workers from outside than unskilled labors in their operating areas. (*)
