Toxic gas kills Freeport worker

Donny Asmond was killed and three others were hospitalized after inhaling toxic gas when they were working in an underground mine at Freeport Indonesia?s gold mine area in Papua, Kompas reported on Monday.

The man?s three other friends Awa Mardiana, Heri Purwanto and Pahnama are currently treated at a hospital in Tembagapura.

When contacted on Sunday, the head of the local police I Gde S Jaya, confirmed the incident, saying that it occurred on Saturday at the Amole 25 crossing at the underground mine Deep Ore Zone (DOZ), which produces 80,000 tons of mineral ores a day.

Meanwhile, Freeport spokesman Ramdani Sirait said that the incident occurred because the content of oxygen drastically declined. ?The man was dead after being evacuated from the mining area,? he added. (*)
