Petrochemical company PT Trans Pacific Petrochemical Indotama (TPPI), a subsidiary of state-owned energy company PT Pertamina, has denied reports of a fire at its refinery in Tuban, East Java. The company clarified that the incident involved only a minor equipment malfunction that caused smoke, with no explosion or casualties.
Earlier, photos showing thick black smoke allegedly coming from TPPI’s refinery area circulated on Thursday afternoon, October 16, 2025. Responding to the reports, TPPI Area Manager for CSR & Comrel, Tinoto Hadi Sucipto, said the company’s emergency team acted swiftly to contain the situation.

“There was an issue with one of our equipment units that caused smoke, but there was no explosion and the situation remained safe. Our emergency team handled it within about 30–40 minutes, and the refinery resumed normal operations afterward,” Tinoto said on Thursday, as quoted by Tempo.co.
He added that the incident did not affect the refinery’s fuel supply. “Operations are running normally, and fuel distribution remains smooth,” he said.
Pertamina holds more than an 80 percent stake in TPPI, which produces various petrochemical and petroleum products.
