Transportation Ministry to focus on mass transportation system next year

Transportation Ministry said it will next year focus on developing mass transportation system in particular land transportation and railway system.
Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said during a hearing with members of the People’s Representative Council (DPR) Commission VI who oversees transportation sector that to realize the plan, the government will allocate higher expenditure to support the development of mass transportation system.
The Parliament members called on the Transportation Ministry to add rolling stocks in order to increase the capacity of the train given increase public appetite to travel by train.
Minister Budi said the plan is in line with the direction of President Joko Widodo.
The funds will be allocated to buy new buses, improve bus terminal facilities, add railway infrastructure, add rolling stocks and others.
As for railway, the Transportation Ministry will improve railway infrastructure in order to boost the growth of train transportation by 20 percent.
In the past, the growth of railway transportation system reached at 2-3 percent per year only. With the completion of double tracks, the state run train operator PT Kereta Api (KAI) hopes to increase the annual growth by 20-percent per annum.
