PT Triaryani has formed a consortium with US power firm AES Corp. and Sojitz Corp. from Japan to build mine-mouth power plant in Musi Rawas, South Sumatra.

The coal-fired power plant project with a capacity of 2x600 MW will cost US$1.5 billion or about Rp 13 trillion.

AES would hold majority shares in the special purpose company/SPC to be established and will operate the mine-mouth power plant, PT Triaryani?s president director Teddy Setiawan said in Jakarta Tuesday.

AES is a global power company with 2005 revenues of $11.1 billion. The company has operations in 26 countries on five continents with 44,000 MW capacities

He said that the power outputs would be sold to PLN

According to Teddy, the consortium would develop the coal-fired power plant projects in several stages, with the first one being the planned construction of 2x600 MW coal-fired power plant now being proposed to PLN.

The consortium would also construct three other units of coal-fired power plants, each with a capacity of 1,000 MW. The projects will need an additional investment of US$3 billion.

Several banks have expressed their eagerness to finance the power projects. They include Islamic Development Bank (IDB), Japan Bank For International Cooperation (JBIC), HSBC, ING, and Caliyon, Teddy added.

Meanwhile, PLN?s deputy director for Independent Power Producer Nasri Sebayang said that the company and Triaryani had formed a negotiation team. ?The power purchase agreement (PPA) is expected to be signed in June of this year,? he said. (*)
