PT Patria Maritime Lines (PML), a coal-transportation subsidiary of PT United Tractors Pandu Engineering (UTPE), officially started its operation on Monday by launching the maiden voyage of a set of tug boat and barge.

The maiden voyage of Patria 1 tug boat and Auriga barge was launched in a ceremony held at the jetty of Swiss Bell-Hotel Borneo, Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan. The ceremony was attended by among others Michael D. Ruslim, the President Director of PT Astra International Tbk, and Djoko Pranoto, the President Director of PT United Tractors Tbk.

PT United Tractors Pandu Engineering is the subsidiary of PT United Tractors (UT), which is a subsidiary of PT Astra International.

PML was established on Aug. 29, 2008 to provide transportation service for the country?s booming coal industry. But, in the beginning, the firm will focus on transporting coal produced by the mining subsidiaries of UT. UT has two mining units in South Kalimantan, that is PT Kalimantan Prima Persada and PT Prima Multi Mineral (a unit of PT Pamepersada Nusantara, which is a unit of UT) and one mining unit in Central Kalimantan that is PT Tuah Turangga Agung.

PML will start with eight sets of tug boat and barge. Gradually, it will increase its tug boat and barge armada to 16 sets in 2010 and 19 sets in 2011 with total potential transporting capacity of 7 million tons of coal, PML said in a statement on Tuesday.

?The presence of PML marks an important milestone for UTPE this year, because it is believed that it will fast grow and become a prime mover that complements and strengthens the business value chain of UTPE in particular and UT in general,? the firms said. (denny)
