Unocal gets environmental awards

Unocal Indonesia has received the highest Kalpataru environmental awards from the government for its rehabilitation and reforestation project in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan.
Unocal said in a statement last week that the Kalpataru awards were presented not only to Unocal but also to state oil and gas firm Pertamina and the Balikpapan administration for their greenbelt cooperative project that was started 12 years ago.
The project aimed to prevent erosion, improve drainage system and beautify some areas in Balikpapan and its surrounding areas.
The project, led by the Balikpapan administration, is carried out by local people, while planning, technical engineering, and funding for the project was provided by Unocal and Pertamina. (*)
