Unocal receives environmental award

Oil and gas firm PT Unocal Indonesia Company will receive the prestigious Kalpataru Award today from the government for its outstanding role in improving the local environment in the East Kalimantan province.
The local Kaltim Post daily said that the Kalpataru Award would be handed over by President Abdurrahman Wahid at the State Palace.
Unocal public relations chief Samsulistyo said that the company had been involved in the development of the local environment since 1980 but concrete measures were only implemented in 1989. He said that the company had spent some Rp 1 billion (US$1=Rp 8,500) particularly to help improve the critical land in the villages.
He said that the program was labor-intensive. (*)
