The first appraisal of Unocal?s Gehem discovery in Ganal PSC offshore East Kalimantan is being tested, IHS Energy reported recently.

According to IHS Energy, Gehem-2 was drilled by Diamond Offshore?s "Ocean Baroness" S/S some 700 meters deeper than the discovery to a total depth of 5,367 m. The well is in 1,840 m of water, about 3 kilometers south of Gehem-1.

Because it encountered only moderate pressures even at a total depth of 4,645 meters, Unocal decided to drill the follow-up wells considerably deeper, IHS Energy added.

In mid-2003, Gehem-1 discovery encountered 188 m of net gas and condensate pay and 5 m net oil pay.

Unocal?s earlier estimate put Gehem?s range of reserves at 2-3 trillion cubic feet of gas. Gehem is set to become gas supplier of Bontang LNG plant with production commencement seen in 2006-2007. (*)
