Unocal to produce 60,000 bpd at West Seno

Unocal Indonesia Company, a subsidiary of American oil and gas firm Unocal Corp. would produce 60,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd) and 150,000 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD) of gas at the West Seno deepwater field when production started in the fourth quarter of 2002, state oil and gas company Pertamina said on Thursday.

The field is located at Makassar Strait Block A Production Sharing Contract offshore East Kalimantan.

Pertamina's production sharing contract (PSC) director Iin Arifin Takhyan told reporters that the gas would be sent to Unocal's gas terminal in Tanjung Santan, East Kalimantan, from which the gas would be delivered to industries in Bontang, including state fertilizer company PT Pupuk Kaltim and liquefied natural gas (LNG) producer PT Badak NGL Co, and Kaltim Methanol Indonesia.

Badak NGL is owned by Pertamina and partners, while Kaltim Methanol Indonesia is controlled by Japanese firm Nissho Iwai.

West Seno is the first deepwater field to be developed in the country.

Iin said Unocal was prepared to build the first phase of the production facilities at the block, including a tension log platform and a floating processing unit.

He refused to reveal the amount of investment allocated by Unocal for the construction of all the facilities, but sources at the state company said the total investment would reach US$700 million.

Senior official at the directorate Trijana told Petromindo.Com that seven international consortiums had passed through the technical examination phase of the bidding process for the contracts to build the facilities.

Commercial bidding would be held in March this year, Triana added. (Alex/Godang)
