South Kalimantan-based coal producer PT Adaro Indonesia on Tuesday declared force majeure for its coal shipments loaded via South Pulau Laut Coal Terminal, which operated by PT Indonesia Bulk Terminal (IBT), following a serious damage at the terminal's conveyor belt structures.

?Because of this damage IBT declared Force Majeure to Adaro on 3rd January 2005 at 07:20 hrs and in turn Adaro has had declare Force Majeure on all shipments scheduled to be loaded at IBT until further notice,? Adaro said in a statement.

However, Adaro said, loading operations were continuing as normal at the Taboneo Anchorage offshore Banjarmasin.

?Adaro will work closely with IBT to ensure that repairs are carried out as quickly as possible and that disruption to shipping schedules is kept to a minimum,? Adaro added.

IBT estimates that repairs to the conveyor system may take up to 6 weeks to complete.

An Adaro official told Petromindo.Com that the company may set two units of floating crane to service vessels that are originally scheduled to load at IBT. "Two cranes with total capacity of 15,000-20,000 tons can be put erected in two or three days," said Adaro administration manager Priyadi.

Priyadi said the decision would be executed if the customers agree to the proposal.

Adaro ships some 6 MTPA of coal to its customers through IBT.

IBT's terminal lies on major domestic and international shipping routes. The terminal's major clients are PT Adaro Indonesia, PT Arutmin Indonesia, PT Baramulti, PT Multi Harapan Utama.

The terminal has stockyard capacity of 800,000 metric tons and is capable to receive 85,000 dead weight ton vessels. In 2003, throughput from this port reached 7.18 million tons of coal. (godang)
