Audit results of Newmont's environmental impacts to be announced today

The verification team formed by Minister of Mines and Energy Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was scheduled to visit today the gold mine of PT Newmont Minahasa Raya in Mesel, Minahasa regency, North Sulawesi to check the C-class mining products - extracted by the company, Manado Post reported.
The paper quoted by head of Minahasa's legal section as saying that the team, comprising the officials of the ministry, the provincial mines and energy office and the regency administration would check the C-class mining products - building materials and industrial minerals - extracted by the company from 1995 to March 2000.
The team will do their job for 15 days.
The team was formed following the regency's move to sue Newmont for the latter's refusal to pay taxes on the C-class mining products to the regency.
Meanwhile, the paper said, the independent team formed by the North Sulawesi provincial administration was scheduled to announce the results of the environmental audit on the company's tailings. (*)
