Vico pays compensation

Oil and gas firm Vico paid on Monday some Rp 136.90 million (US$1=Rp 8,775) in cash to some 28 people of the Beringin Agung village, Samboja sub district, East Kalimantan, as a compensation for the damage in their paddy field due to the development of the Mutiara 8 gas refinery facility.

The local Jaya Post daily said that the paddy field of the villagers were no longer productive because it had been damaged by landslide caused by the development of the refinery facility.

The paper quoted company public relations officer Widjaja as saying that regarding the other compensation demand, the company would still have to study and make further verification with the local land authority.

Some villagers claimed that Vico gas pipeline had been passing through their land property.

Jaya Post also said that Vico would pay compensation worth Rp 96.24 million to the people in the Sanipah, Handil and Bukit Raya areas on Thursday.

Regarding the road blockade leading to the Mutiara 8 refinery facility, the company would improve and upgrade the condition of the road as demanded by the local villagers. (*)
