Vietnam coal imports rise in early 2026, led by Indonesia and Australia

Vietnam imported more than 11.16 million tonnes of coal in the first two months of 2026, with the total value reaching $1.21 billion, up 3.6% in volume and 3.18% in value compared with the same period last year, customs data showed as reported by Vietnam.vn.
Coal imports in February alone totaled 4.95 million tonnes, worth $538.64 million, marking a decline of about 20% from January in both volume and value. Despite the drop, the average import price rose slightly by 0.87% month-on-month to $108.8 per tonne.
Compared with February 2025, import volumes fell by 13.85% and values declined by 11.83%, while average prices increased by 2.35% year-on-year.
Vietnam’s coal supply remains concentrated among three main suppliers — Australia, Indonesia and Russia — which together accounted for more than 86% of total imports during the January–February period.

Indonesia was the largest supplier by volume, exporting about 4.26 million tonnes to Vietnam, representing 38.14% of total imports. However, the value of imports from Indonesia declined by 5.67% year-on-year to around $353.77 million, reflecting a slight drop in average prices to $83.12 per tonne.
Australia ranked second in volume at 3.88 million tonnes but remained the largest supplier by value, accounting for 43.55% of total import spending at $526.86 million. Imports from Australia rose by more than 14% in both volume and value compared with the same period last year, supported by higher average prices of $135.9 per tonne.
Russia recorded the fastest growth among major suppliers, with exports to Vietnam reaching 1.28 million tonnes, up 35.52% year-on-year. The value of imports from Russia increased by 14.9% to $161.02 million, accounting for about 13.3% of total import value.
