Vietnam?s private power producer Long Thuan Investment Corporation needs 1 million ton of coal supply this year to fuel five small scale power plants in the country. Long Thuan generates power to supply electricity for state-owned power utility.

?We are expected to increase the coal demand to 1.5 million tons next year,? Duang Thanh Hai, Long Thuan?s President of the Board, said to Petromindo.com. He added that the company requires Indonesian coals to fuel power plants as Vietnam?s are mostly high calorific value coals. Meanwhile, gas and fuel prices are too expensive for power plant development.

According to U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), electricity consumption in Vietnam nearly quadrupled from 22 billion kilowatthours (KWh) in 2000 to 86 billion KWh in 2010 and was generated almost entirely by hydropower, natural gas, and coal. Vietnam anticipates power demand to more than triple to 330 billion KWh by 2020.
