Villagers attack AGM coal stockpile
Friday, April 14 2000 - 05:00 AM WIB
Hundreds of people of the Soato Tatakan Village in South Kalimantan staged a peaceful demonstration at the stockpile unit of coal mining firm PT Antang Gunung Meratus (AGM), Kapos daily reported.
The paper said that the villagers held the protest after the local Tapin House of Representatives failed to fight for their cause.
The villagers had protested AGM's coal stockpile unit, which had polluted the local environment particularly the irrigation system in the village.
The protest ended peacefully Thursday afternoon after the company, officials of the local administration and several legislators held a dialogue with the protesters.
It's not clear what decision had been reached. (*)
