Monday, May 22 2000 - 04:00 AM WIB

The people of the Sebuntal Village in the Marangkayu area in East Kalimantan blockaded the road to oil and gas firm PT Vico Indonesia Samberah plant in protest over land acquisition plans.

The local Samarinda Post daily reported that the villagers disagreed on the company's plans to provide land compensation in the form of community development worth Rp 1-2 billion.

The villagers demanded the company to pay them the compensation for their land.

The paper also said that the villagers demanded future negotiation to be only conducted with the company without the attendance of the military and the police.

The villagers said that they would continue to blockade the road until the company fulfilled their demand.

It's not clear what the impact of the road blockade to the company was. (*)
