Villagers have blockaded the road to coal mining firm PT Tanito Harun in Loa Ulung area in Tenggarong subdistrict, East Kalimantan, after the company's coal truck hit one villager to death.
The local police unit is currently negotiating the villagers to reopen the road.
The accident occurred last year. Tanito Harun gave the family of the victim Rp 5 million as compensation, but the family demanded Rp 30 million which was rejected by the firm.
This has caused a friction between the company and the local villagers, which lead to the blockading of the road. Suara Kaltim didn't say when the road blockade started.
Separately, the paper also said that Tanito Harun was still in dispute with some of its employees over salary policy. The company didn't pay the salary of its employees who recently held a strike for a week. The company reasoned that based on the existing regulation, it would only pay those who work for a certain period of hours.
The employees held the strike demanding a better salary package.(*)
