Residents of Swarga Bara village in East Kalimantan have demanded a compensation payment of Rp 12,500 (US$1=Rp9,250) for each square meter of their land that have been included in the concession area of major coal mine PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC), Kaltim Post reported on Monday.

Mukidin, who represented the villagers, said that they refused the compensation offered by the company and would continue to demand compensation payment of Rp 12,500 per cubic meter of the 500 hectare land used by KPC.

According to him, KPC has offered a compensation payment of Rp 300 per cubic meter of unproductive land and Rp 500 for productive land. "The offer is still too low," he said.

The villagers also refused to receive any form of payment until the company agreed with their demand. (*)
