Villagers demand PLN to pay compensation

Thursday, August 31 2000 - 03:00 AM WIB

Thousands of villagers continued to press the state-owned electricity company and the South Kalimantan Governor to pay a compensation for some 108 square meter of land in the Aranio sub district, Banjar regency, which was taken over by the company 30 years ago for the development of a hydro power generation project, the local Metrobanjar daily reported.

The paper said that there seems to be no signs of PLN and the local administration to take the demand seriously.

The paper quoted one of the villagers as saying that if PLN and the Governor of South Kalimantan failed to immediately settle the problem, the villagers would direct their anger to the company and the Governor.

According to Metrobanjar, the compensation amount to Rp 162 billion (US$1=Rp 8,300) assuming a land price of Rp 1,500 per sqm. (*)
