Villagers threaten to blockade Vico road

A group of farmers in Samboja, Kutai Kertanegara regency, East Kalimantan, has threatened to blockade the Mutiara 8 Street which has been used by oil and gas firm PT Vico Indonesia as its transportation route because the company has not paid compensation for alleged environmental damage.
The Kaltim Post daily reported Saturday that the road blockade would start on Monday.
The paper quoted Stevanus Suwarno, who claims to represent the farmers, as saying that waste from Vico had caused damaged to local paddy fields.
He said that some 200 hectares of paddy fields had been damaged by pollution from Vico waste material.(*)
