Villagers to take action against logging activity in BHP Kendilo site

Tuesday, January 30 2001 - 04:30 AM WIB

The people of the Petangis village in Pasir regency, East Kalimantan, will take action against logging activity trespassing the mining site of coal mining company PT BHP Kendilo if the local authority fails to curb the illegal logging within one week time, the local Kaltim Post daily reported.

The paper quoted the villagers as saying that the authority had been slowed in curbing the logging activity.

BHP has planned to transform its mining site in the Petangis area into a tourism spot once its mining contract ends in 2002. The plans had presented to the local administration and the villagers support the plans.

But the logging activity by an unknown company in the mining site could ruin the plans. The villagers and several non-governmental organizations had protested the logging activity and called on the authority to take immediate action. (*)
